Signal Conditioning Applications Slide 6
The two eye patterns seen here are for signal at 5 and 10 Gbps.  Note the EYEs on the right are with the EP device and are open and exhibit much less jitter.  They are also attenuated in level.  Care needs to be taken that the signal still meets the receiver deserializer (DES) input requirements.  If possible adjust the line driver characteristics to optimize it for use with an EP equalizer.  Use pre-emphasis, or select a larger starting VOD to maximize the link performance.  EP equalizers may be stacked and also used with an active equalizer as long as the down stream device’s input swing requirement is met.  These devices are a great way to support higher data rates and to extend the life of a chassis or extend the reach of a link.
