The SerDes chipset deploys a number of signal conditioning tricks. Pre-emphasis and a scalable VOD are two common ones provided. The SerDes chipset also uses “RBS” coding to further improve the signal quality (and also reduce EMI) on the link. The same color (pixel) is sent (e.g. background color) numerous times in a display application. This can be bad if not coded as the transition density could range from none to little to every edge. Also, a fixed pattern tends to have a beat and the classic ISI problem of a single bit transition after a long string of 1s or 0s is encountered. The randomization, scrambling and DC balancing coding scheme is used to improve the signal quality, open the EYE, and also reduce EMI. The Crosspoint expands the versatility of the bus allowing the connection of multiple sources or sinks to the system. It is compatible with either un-encoded or coded data.
