This example analyzes a fixed length interconnect of 26 inches of FR4 trace. Simply raising the data rate results in the eye closing until jitter exceeds 1 UI. In the past, data rates were low and this was not too much of a problem. Only on long interconnects such as cables of 100 meters would this be a potential problem. As data rates have increased, this signal distortion effect is now important not just for the long interconnects, but even the chip-to-chip interconnects. Looking at a SMPTE Router for HD applications as an example, data rate was 1.5 Gbps. Now with the newer HD standards 2.97 (3) Gbps is common and the interconnect effects become great and need attention even between the ICs within the router.
