There are 3 general cases where buffers or equalizers can be placed. The location may depend on the preferred location for optimal signal conditioning – or may be just where board space is available. At the top we see an example of a repeater, where input equalization might be required as well as output pre-emphasis. In the middle example, the buffer is immediately adjacent to an ASIC or FPGA and the device is required as a stronger driver. In the bottom example the device is placed at the receiver end, and is only acting as an equalizer. TI offers 3 devices for these scenarios – the BR100 with both EQ and PEM, the BR110 with 3 settings of equalization, and the BR120 with 3 settings of PEM.
