Media introduced ISI can be compensated using equalization at the receiver or, alternatively by using pre-emphasis at the driver. In the case of pre-emphasis, the rising and falling edges are boosted about the same amount as the expected media loss. As seen in the waveform, with pre-emphasis the signal leaving the driver is distorted, but if the setting is correct will end up with minimal distortion at the receiver. Multiple pre-emphasis settings are provided to allow a boost selection appropriate for the expected media loss.
