High Voltage Offline Converters Slide 6

There are also two different approaches from an electrical component standpoint when implementing a flyback power supply: integrated and discrete. The integrated control IC includes a high level of functionality not limited to: startup circuitry, switch, and error amplifier. A discrete approach will use a control IC to drive an external switch (typically a MOSFET) and may also require external circuitry for startup and control. The integrated approach limits the flexibility of the design, especially in regards to total output power capability, but is a compact and easy to implement solution. The discrete approach is more flexible, but requires more components and often higher cost. ST Microelectronics has outstanding offerings for both the VIPer and ALTAIR integrated high voltage converter ICs and the L6566 and L6565 discrete control ICs.
