298D Series Slide 12

In audio and video applications, it is imperative that all noise be filtered out of the circuit in order to deliver crisp, clean sound to the listener. Tantalum capacitors perform this function at a much higher level than ceramic capacitors. The above Oscilloscope traces depict what happens when a tuning fork is placed on each part in an audio circuit. The top trace, the ceramic cap, shows a trace full of transients (noise), while the lower trace, the Vishay 298D tantalum capacitor, is noise-free. This is the major reason why tantalum capacitors are used for signal conditioning in audio and video applications. The smaller case size capacitors are needed, such as the 298D, for shrinking space in AV circuitry.
