While the best IGBT snubber capacitor will ultimately be determined by test and measurement, it is possible to pick a good starting point. The KEMET series C4B is available in a wide voltage range. Select a voltage that is the same as or higher than the rated voltage of the IGBT. Next, choose a tab style from the datasheet that matches the IGBT terminals. A guideline for snubber selection including which tab styles are suited for the most common IGBTs is also available. Finally, pick an initial capacitance value to test. A good starting point is to use 0.5µF for each 100A of IGBT current. This may be increased if the system inductance is expected to be relatively high.
