The screen shot images on this slide illustrate the need for snubber capacitors on IGBTs. Due to the inductance of the system, voltage spikes are generated as the IGBT is switched. These voltage spikes, if of sufficient amplitude can damage the IGBT. By placing a capacitor across the IGBT the voltage spikes are damped to a safe level. It is best to reduce the inductance of the snubber capacitor as much as possible. This is accomplished by manufacturing the capacitors with short tabs that mount directly to the IGBT terminals.
