Most power electronic devices using an IGBT module also have a DC link capacitor. To review quickly, most power electronic devices first convert the input voltage to a fixed DC voltage. This DC bus, or DC link, provides the power for the output converter. The output converter provides the intended voltage for the device. It might be 50 or 60Hz AC for the grid in the case of alternative energy generators, or it might be higher frequency three phase power for an industrial motor drive.
