The most common application for RF Synthesizers / PLLs is as a local oscillator in wireless base station radio cards. The device is used to provide a reference frequency to the mixer, modulator or demodulator in order to modulate the signal from RF to an intermediate frequency (IF) or baseband frequency, or to modulate the signal from a baseband frequency to an IF or RF frequency.
