Jitter induced from vibration is another potential impairment for differential oscillators. Vibration stress can come from system components such as fans and capacitors, which transduce electrical power to mechanical vibration. Outdoor equipment deployments can expose the system to other forms of vibration stress such as vibration from wind, passing trucks, and trains. MEMS differential oscillators have superior shock and vibration resistance compared to their quartz counterparts because MEMS resonators are stiffer structures and have approximately 1,000 to 3,000 times lower mass compared to quartz resonators. This means a given acceleration imposed on a MEMS structure, such as from shock or vibration, will result in a much lower force than its quartz equivalent, and therefore will induce a much lower frequency shift. This graph shows the less than 10 times lower (better) vibration sensitivity of SiTime MEMS oscillators vs. quartz differential oscillators.
