Another issue caused by the derating effect is an increase in the package size. Engineers need to over-spec their DC/DC converters to compensate the loss in power at high temperatures. This means they need to select a bigger size package. A conventional converter that delivers 20W at 85 degrees will have a package size of 2 inches by 2 inches. The new RECOM converters with ICE technology are able to deliver 20W at 100 degrees in a package size of 1.6 inches by 1 inch.
