XO Replacement Overview Slide 6

In a traditional crystal oscillator implementation, the higher frequencies are obtained by reducing the crystal thickness to get the right oscillation frequency. This method thins the crystal to the point where the thickness could affect reliability due to mechanical shock and vibration. The PureEdge solution, using a fundamental mode crystal and silicon PLL, can provide increased system reliability. For example, with a frequency of 150 MHz, the 3rd overtone solution uses X thickness of the crystal to achieve fundamental frequency of 50 MHz. The PureEdge solution will use a standard 25 MHz crystal, which is 2X of the thickness of the traditional implementation. This results in increased system reliability for mechanical vibrations and shock.
