In general, designers of the next generation system are tasked to add more features and function, increase speed and offer users increased flexibility. All of these functions will usually need a clean reference clock source, traditionally implemented by a single frequency, single power supply crystal oscillator. This increases the number of components in the bill of materials (BOMs), driving manufacturing costs higher. Shown here is an example of an enterprise switch. A system design using the traditional approach would require six different frequencies resulting in six different components, increasing BOM. By contrast, using the onsemi dual frequency PureEdge™ solutions, the number of different components is minimized from six to only three, improving the system cost and simplifying the bill of materials.
