Life Comparison
When calculating the life of a part and the design calls for an operating temperature that is less than the capacitors rated temperature, the engineer can plan on a longer life expectancy. A good rule of thumb is that for every 10°C reduction in temperature the life will double. Hybrids follow this same rule of thumb. However, polymers are different. For every 20°C drop in temperature the life increases 10 times. This chart shows how this concept works, starting with a part rated at 125°C and incremental drops in temperature of 10°C.
