Essentially a smart grid is a bi-directional flow of energy and communication between the source of energy and the user. This includes power generation and transmission to and from the home. There are many applications, including appliances or cars which require a battery charge. A smart grid improves power reliability, increases the resiliency of the grid, increases the capacity of the feeder with smaller losses, and integrates the renewable and distributable energies. Additionally, a smart grid increases consumer awareness because of higher visibility of what energy is being consumed. Increased awareness leads to reduced consumption.
