The commercialization of blue LEDs using GaN in the mid-1990’s by Nichia Corp. was perhaps the biggest change in the industry, as it allowed the possibility of true RGB lighting with opto-semiconductors. While the opto-semiconductor technology has improved significantly, it is also important to note the improvements in packaging, both for thermal management and for optical engineering. Today there are several manufacturers of high power LEDs. Several of these LEDs are single die devices that can take as high as 1.5A and up to 30A for some specialized LEDs.
