The integrated drivers we have discussed so far can drive motors up to 4 amps from supply voltages of 50V and below. For higher power motors, more current, a higher voltage, or both are needed. Such drive circuits are outside of the sweet spot that can effectively be done with fully integrated motor driver devices and we will need to move to discrete power MOS devices with gate drive circuits. In this configuration ST has a family of half bridge gate driver ICs designed to drive the gates of N-channel MOS devices for both the upper and lower device in the half H-bridge. When used in conjunction with the L6506, the L6384 provides a good solution for steppers.
