As shown in the graphs on this slide, a ceramic capacitor’s capacitance value tends to degrade under increased bias voltage and temperature. Due to this degradation of MLCC capacitors, designers tend to specify higher capacitance values and voltage ratings than what is needed in a circuit in order to compensate the loss. On the other hand, a tantalum capacitor’s capacitance value is very stable under voltage fluctuation and has very small de-rating under temperature changes.
