For applications where board space is an issue (high density circuit boards), bottom surface devices are preferable to the devices that have 5-surface electrodes, as shown in the picture here. With the 5-surface electrodes, chances of a short circuit are very high when components are placed very close to each other on the PC boards. Devices with bottom surface electrodes do not have this disadvantage, and they can be mounted as close as surface mount technology will allow in order to save the much needed circuit board real estate on high-density boards.
