In summary, IC memory can roughly be divided into two categories, Random Access Memory or RAM, and Read-Only Memory, known as ROM. RAM is a volatile memory device which can be read and written anytime. ROM is non-volatile, but can either be written slower than RAM, or it cannot be written at all. ROM can be divided into Mask ROM and programmable read-only memory or PROM, EEPROM or Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory is an electronically erasable advancement on EPROM. One of the largest markets for EEPROM is the wireless and portable market, other application areas include the healthcare, medical, and automotive markets.
