As stated earlier, the MAX7219/MAX7221 is easy to design with since the state of each segment can be stored in the product. The MAX7221 differs from the MAX7219 in that the serial interface is compatible with SPI and QSPI and in that its drivers switch to high impedance when turned off whereas the MAX7219 drivers pull up to VCC.
