In summary, there are four main applications which all use capacitors for either a single function or multiple functions within the circuit; these are decoupling, filtering, timing and wave shaping, and oscillating. Each of these applications utilizes some unique feature found in particular capacitor dielectrics, and nearly all electronic applications require the use of capacitors. The first, and the most common capacitor application is the decoupling capacitor which provides the quick burst of energy needed for switching electronic circuits. In the filtering application, the function is to block a DC voltage or to allow an AC voltage to pass through.
