High Voltage Integrated Circuits (HVIC Gate Drivers) Slide 14
Opto-coupler based circuits, usually used in motor drive applications, provide full electrical isolation which is a definite advantage. However, they generally require a separate power supply because of their high quiescent current, offer slow propagation delay, slow delay matching, and are limited in frequency range due to high delay matching. Furthermore, they are higher in power dissipation, susceptible to noise, their high dV/dt specs require more expensive optos, and finally they require a separate circuit for under-voltage lockout.
