In the beginning there was a similar block diagram to that shown here, to understand the basic PWM architecture. Now the designer will look at this architecture from a control loop perspective. In an analog system there are three parts to the control loop. The amplifier which creates the error signal, and this is where the designer puts all the compensation. Then there is a modulator. The modulator has a gain based upon the slope of the modulator ramp. Lastly, the power stage is an inductor, capacitor, with some ESR, so one has a double pull from the LC and a zero from the ESR zero of the output capacitor. The first architecture the designer will look at is the voltage mode buck regulator. Voltage mode control is used in all of the available buck controllers. It consists of three main sections: the modulator stage, the power stage, and the feedback, error-amp, and compensation stage.
