Now let's look at basic switch mechanical functions, starting with poles and throws. A pole represents a unique contact group or circuit, and a throw represents the number of circuits that each pole can control. Most common is a single pole, single throw type switch (on/off). The next most common is the single pole, double throw type switch. Most switches are multiples of these two common types.
