IMS (Insulated Metal Substrate) boards, also sometimes known as Metal Core PCB (MCPCB) consist of a metal base plate, a thin dielectric layer, and a layer of copper to be used to lower thermal resistance. The dielectric is normally 100 microns as it is a poor thermal conductor. The metal plate is then screwed to a heatsink using a thermal interface such as a grease of a silicone base pad. IMS can provide effective thermal management but issues remain over its reliability.
