In summary of this UL1449 3rd edition standard, the new safety initiative became effective in September 2009 and supersedes all preceding editions. The 3rd edition also includes new independent performance testing requirements and design considerations. The standard bases the type designations on the location of the SPD within the electrical system and component assemblies, type designators range from 1 to 5 levels. Littelfuse TMOV® Thermally protected varistors have an integrated thermally-active element to provide compliance to the abnormal overvoltage, limited current requirements of UL1449 in a single component. All ratings in the TMOV14, TMOV20, and larger devices are approved to UL1449 3rd edition.
