A shield is a metallic layer placed around a conductor or group of conductors. Shielding protects against electromagnetic interference (EMI), more commonly known as noise. Noise can be internal or external to the cable. Internal noise occurs when a varying magnetic field generated by one conductor induces a voltage on another conductor in the same cable. External noise is generated by EMI sources such as electric motors, fluorescent lighting, and variable frequency drives that come in contact with cables. Shielding utilizes a physical property of conductive enclosures which cancels externally generated EMI. The most common types of shielding are braided, spiral, foil, and a combination of foil and braid.
