DO NOT ATTEMPT to Re-Create

With the upcoming release of Thor: Love and Thunder — the fourth installment in the Thor series — Hacksmith Industries decided it was time for another Mjolnir project. The Hacksmith is no stranger to Mjolnir, having already built several iterations of Thor’s hammer. For Thor: Ragnarok, the team created a Mjolnir with a 300V capacitor that sparks when the hammer is thrown down. Later, they made a hammer with a powerful electromagnet, so only the worthy could lift it (or anyone who knew where the off switch was).

Although the Hacksmith’s most recent video considers a wielder’s worthiness, to enhance the design, the latest version of the Mjolnir will fly to the wielder when summoned. With the many Hacksmith-created Mjolnirs over the years, it was only a matter of time before they created one that flew into the user’s hand. See how it was made in the video below!

How Does It Work?

The hammer is mounted on a system of cables that works like a bigger version of a delta 3D printer. The system allows the hammer to fly in any direction on X, Y, and Z axes via 3 cables. Each cable is attached to a winch on the wall. Based on the user’s input from a controller, the winches will loosen or contract their cable length to move the hammer to its destination.

Using a remote to control Thor’s hammer isn’t ideal, so the next step was giving it “Asgardian autopilot.” A Zed 2 Stereo camera was mounted to the wall to do this. The Zed 2 was designed to use AI to record and measure 3D spatial data quickly. After trial and error, the Zed 2’s data was aligned with the information being fed to the cable system, letting the hammer fly to whoever raised their hand with the push of a button.

Although Mjolnir could be summoned, it wouldn’t be the real deal unless the wielder could bring the hammer down. So the hammer needed a system to release it from the cables after the wielder catches it. A capacitive touch sensor was added to the handle. When pressed, it engages a solenoid that releases all three cables simultaneously. The circuit and its battery were packed securely in the hammer’s head to ensure it was robust enough to withstand flying, smashing, and other Mjolnir activities.
