Shunt references offer greater flexibility when negative or floating voltages need to be provided. Certain sensors and operational amplifier circuits require precise negative voltage conditions. The circuitry for current limiting is an example when floating voltage conditions are required from a voltage reference. Only a shunt reference can provide this flexibility.
