As previously stated, the LT3088 is a de-contented version of the LT3089. Because of its current-based reference, the LT3088 only requires a single resistor to set Vout, which is a potential barrier to entry and makes it more difficult for the competition to enter the socket after the PCB board is laid out, compared to the 2-resistor Vout set nature of the other “1117” type competing devices. The LT3088 datasheet contains a section on how to convert from an LT1117 to the LT3088.
