LT3088-89-Slide3

The LT3089 is a rugged 800mA wide input voltage range linear regulator with key usability, monitoring and protection features. The device has extended SOA compared to existing regulators, making it ideal for applications with high input-to-output voltage and high output current in comparison to older regulators that limit power dissipation. It uses a current source reference, allowing a single resistor to set output voltage, with output adjustability down to 0V. Output current limit can be set externally with a single resistor. This regulator architecture, combined with low mV line and load regulation, enables multiple ICs to be paralleled easily for heat spreading and higher output current. The current from the device’s current monitor can be summed with the SET pin current for line-drop compensation, where the LT3089’s output voltage increases with increasing load current to compensate for line drops. The LT3089 achieves unmatched line and load regulation of under 2mV, independent of output voltage and features an input voltage range from 1.2V to 36V. Output voltage is programmable with a single resistor from 0 V to 34.5V with a 1.2V dropout, therefore it fits well in applications requiring multiple rails. The on-chip trimmed 50µA current reference is ±1% accurate. The regulation, transient response, and output noise 28µV RMS are independent of output voltage due to the device’s voltage follower architecture. The LT3089 is configurable as a 2-terminal current source using only two resistors. Input or output capacitors for stability are optional in either linear regulator mode or current-source mode of operation. The LT3088 is a de-contented version of the LT3089, except in smaller packages, and without the current monitor, temperature monitor, and programmable current limit features. It is pin-compatible to the older LT1117 in the SOT-223 and DD-Pak packages, yet with modernized performance.
