In summary, traditionally constructed MLCCs are vulnerable to catastrophic failure due to cracking associated with board flexure. Vishay’s open mode design MLCCs are constructed such that flexure cracks do not short opposing electrodes, so no catastrophic failures occur. Also, the available conductive polymer termination construction would take advantage of the ability the polymer has to deform when placed under stress, acting as a built-in shock absorber.
