Sensors LMT Temp Sensors Slide 2
Temperature sensing is everywhere! Some form of temperature sensing is performed in almost every system. There are 3 key functions that temperature sensors help perform. The first function is protection. By measuring temperature, the temperature sensor is able to indicate to the system when it is approaching a critical temperature. The system is then able to take some action to rectify the problem. This could be turning on a fan or completely shutting down the system. The next key function is control. The temperature sensor becomes part of a control loop that enables the system to take action based on temperature. This might be ensuring a system is operating in its optimal temperature range. The third function is calibration and compensation. The least recognized of temperature sensing functions, temp sensors are frequently used so temperature drift in other devices can be compensated for. While this presentation covers Analog temperature sensors, TI also has contactless digital and remote diode temp sensors, and temperature switches and sensors.
