Shown on this slide is a block diagram for a typical System-on-Chip electricity meter. The TI MSP430 has the capability of doing all of these functions. A System-on-Chip would include a very accurate analog to digital converter that interfaces with the outside world, a hardware multiplier to enable a fast and accurate calculation, communication peripherals to communicate with the outside world via UART or RF, a metrology engine, and also an LCD driver that can display consumption, a dollar amount, or other desired outputs. Lastly, the meter needs to be calibrated based on the energy output.
