LT3042-Slide10

The LT3042 builds on the performance of Linear Technology’s bulletproof PNP and current-reference-based regulators but takes the performance level significantly higher. The closest devices are the LT1962 and LT1762 which both have a PNP power device, and the LT3082 which has a current based reference NPN power device. Beginning with the comparison to the two PNP devices, the LT3042 has a similar input voltage range, accuracy, and protection, but higher quiescent current. However, it can operate down to 0 V, can be directly paralleled, has fast startup, programmable precision current limit, and power good, as well as better package thermals. The biggest differences are in power supply ripple rejection, spot noise, and output noise, where the LT3042 has superior performance. Compared to the LT3082, which features a similar current-based reference topology, the LT3082 has wider input voltage range, lower quiescent current, a smaller output capacitor, and similar package footprints. However, the LT3042 has fast startup capability, programmable precision current limit and power good, low dropout in single supply operation, and better PSRR and noise performance. Note that quiescent current is not that important in low-noise applications because applications requiring low noise dictate a requirement for higher quiescent current in order to achieve this level of performance.
